Notebook PC Upgrade Kit Installation

Q: I'm running Windows Vista on my notebook PC. Does this kit work with Windows Vista?
A: Three settings in the Windows Vista installation MUST be changed to successfully copy your old hard drive to the new one. Before using the Upgrade Kit, please follow the instructions outlined below to change these settings:
  1. Click on the Windows Vista logo on the taskbar.
  2. In the Search box, type CMD then press Enter.
  3. In the Command Prompt window that appears, type the following command strings, pressing Enter after each string:
    bcdedit /set {bootmgr} device boot
    bcdedit /set {default} device boot
    bcdedit /set {default} osdevice boot
  4. Close the Command Prompt window, then follow the instructions in the Upgrade Kit Installation Guide.

Q: Will the Notebook PC Upgrade Kit work with a Lenovo (IBM) T41, T43, or T60 notebook?
A: The upgrade kit and software will work with the systems listed, however, to successfully upgrade and clone the existing data on the original drive to a new (replacement) drive, you must follow these steps:
  1. Install the new drive internally (inside the notebook)
  2. Install the original drive into the Apricorn external enclosure 3. Boot to the EZ Gig CD application
  3. Using the "Disk Clone" option, clone the external (original) drive to the internal (new) drive (this is opposite the procedure described in our installation guide).
  4. Use “expert” mode to make the new recovery partition the same size as the original recovery partition.

Q: Why is my system unable to boot to the Apricorn upgrade CD?
A: You must set your CD-ROM as the first boot device in your system BIOS. Look in your BIOS for a feature called ‘boot sequence” or similar wording. Change the parameters so the CD-ROM is listed before the hard drive in the boot sequence. This will allow the Apricorn CD to start as expected.

Q: When I boot the Apricorn upgrade CD to use the software, it indicates that it needs a second drive to use the cloning software. I have the enclosure connected to my USB port. Why does it not recognize the drive?
A: There are several potential reasons this message may occur.
  1. Insufficient power - Ensure the drive is using a secondary power source such as the second USB port and verify the power switch is set to ‘ON'. Ensure your laptop is using AC power.
  2. Apricorn software drivers - The Apricorn software uses generic USB 2.0 DOS drivers. These are not always compatible with every USB port. If this is the case, see “How can I clone a drive from within the Windows operating system?”
  3. Hard drive password – If there is a hard drive password set on the original drive you will need to remove the password prior to removing the drive from your laptop.

Q: It is taking hours to copy the original drive to my new Travelstar using your software. Is there something wrong with your hard drive?
A: If your laptop has USB 1.1 ports the data transfer rate is considerably slower than a USB 2.0 port. In this case, what you are observing is normal. If after completing the process, the drive is still unexpectedly slow there might be other issues causing this behavior. In this case, please contact the Support Center for assistance in determining the cause.

Q: Will my system be able to use this larger capacity drive?
A: Most current systems will experience no difficulty using a larger drive. Using a current operating system eases many compatibility concerns. Upgrading your system BIOS to the latest release is also a good idea. Contact your system manufacturer for details regarding a BIOS upgrade.

Q: I have a Windows 98 (or ME) system. How do I get the system to recognize the USB enclosure?
A: Under Windows 98/ME, it is necessary to install a driver for the external enclosure. The driver is located on the Apricorn CD in the ‘drivers' directory. To install the driver, disconnect the enclosure from your notebook, navigate to the ‘ \drivers\ez upgrade\rev b\win 98\ ' subdirectory, and run the setup.exe program. This will install the appropriate drivers for the enclosure. After a reboot, you should have access to the enclosed HDD.

You can find the latest Windows 98 and WinME drivers on the Apricorn site here.

Download the appropriate file, extract the archive to a known directory, and launch the executable installation file to install the drivers.

Q: I have Linux partitions on my hard drive. Will these partitions copy over in the cloning process?
A: Yes, the Apricorn software will copy Linux partitions. The software supports all Windows and Linux file systems, including FAT 16, FAT 32, NTFS, Linux Ext2/Ext3, ReiserFS-3 and Linux Swap. The software also offers sector-based support for other operating systems.

Q: My laptop has hidden/diagnostic partitions on the original hard drive. Will these partitions copy over intact?
A: When you boot directly to the CD the process will copy over all partitions, including hidden or diagnostic partitions. However, the automatic process resizes partitions according to the percentage increase in drive capacity; thus, hidden partitions grow accordingly. To retain their original size, you should use the “expert” mode to size these partitions appropriately.

Q: I connected the upgrade kit as additional storage, however, the new drive does not show up in ‘My Computer'.
A: Windows 2000/XP

Under Windows 2000/XP the enclosure is natively supported by the operating system. This symptom usually occurs because the external drive does not have a partition. To troubleshoot this situation, first verify that the device drivers are properly loaded. Check device manager for the following entries.

A USB Mass Storage Device appears under ‘Universal Serial Bus Controllers’.

A USB device appears under ‘Disk Drives’ (actual name of the drive will depend upon the drive manufacturer and model).

If these are correct, proceed to the ‘Disk Management’ console. Find the appropriate drive, and use the drive installation wizard to set it up for use. Afterwards, the drive should appear under ‘My Computer’ and be ready for use.

Windows 98/ME

Under Windows 98/ME you need to load the appropriate device drivers in order for the enclosure to function correctly. In the System Properties Device Manager tab, verify the drivers are properly installed and working.

The drive should appear under 'disk drives'.

A USB controller should appear under ‘Hard disk controllers’ as well as 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers'.

Once the device drivers are loaded, use the ‘FDISK’ tool to partition the drive. Once partitioned the drive should appear in ‘My Computer’. Right-click on the drive and choose ‘Format’. After formatting, the drive is ready for use.

Q: How can I clone a drive from within the Windows operating system?
A: The preferred method is to boot directly from the CD to clone the drive. To clone a drive within Windows you must install the EZ Gig II application. Insert the CD into your CD-ROM drive. The installation routine should automatically launch; if not, open the CD in ‘My Computer' and double click on the setup icon (setup.exe file). Customize the setup or select the default setup. When complete, reboot the system and launch the EZ Gig II application from the start-programs menu. Select ‘Clone Disk’ and select ‘Start Now’ to start the cloning process. At this point, the process is similar to booting directly to the CD. Please reference your install guide for details.

Q: Where can I purchase the Hitachi Notebook PC Upgrade Kit?
